When you're looking at workplace data, "utilization" can mean different things depending on what you're trying to understand. In Connect, we’ve designed each utilization chart to answer a specific kind of business question — which means the way utilization is calculated may vary slightly across the dashboard.
This document explains:
-
What utilization means in Connect
-
The two core methods used to calculate it
-
Which charts use which method, and why
Our goal: to help you get to the right answer faster, by showing you the right kind of data for the question you're asking.
What is utilization in Connect?
In Connect, utilization refers to how actively a space is being used — either in terms of how many people are in it (seat-based) or how long it’s in use (time-based).
These two methods aren’t shown side-by-side in one chart. Instead, each visualization is built around the metric that best fits its purpose.
Two ways utilization is calculated
Seat Utilization — how full a space is based on occupied vs. available seats, measured every 30 minutes and averaged over your selected timeframe.
-
Formula:
(Occupied Seats) ÷ (Available Seats)
Time Utilization — how long a space is actively used, regardless of how many people are in it.
-
Formula:
(Time Occupied) ÷ (Total Time Available)
Default filters for both:
-
Last 14 days
-
Monday–Friday
-
Business hours (8:00 AM–6:00 PM)
Where do you see each type?
Different charts use different utilization calculations depending on what question they’re designed to answer. Below are the main visualizations and how they work.
Main KPI Panel
Metrics shown:
-
Average seat utilization
-
Peak seat utilization
These give you a quick snapshot of how full your spaces are, and whether you’re consistently meeting or exceeding demand.
Utilization Trend
Metric: Seat Utilization
What it shows: Daily average utilization across your selected timeframe
Good for: Spotting patterns, dips, and surges in demand.
Utilization by Hour
Metric: Seat Utilization
What it shows: Hourly average and peak seat utilization
Good for: Understanding when your spaces are busiest, and whether demand is consistent or spiky throughout the day.
Daily Utilization
Metric: Seat Utilization
What it shows: Daily average seat utilization, bar chart format
Good for: Comparing days side-by-side to spot trends or anomalies.
Utilization Comparison Chart
Metric: Time Utilization
What it shows: Average time utilization by your tag categories (Space type, department, Room etc.)
Good for: Identifying underused or popular spaces.
Utilization by Group Size
Metric: Time Utilization
What it shows: How often spaces are used by different group sizes
Good for: Spotting mismatches (e.g., large rooms used by small groups).

Sensor Heatmap
Metric: Time Utilization
What it shows: Historic average utilization at the sensor level, shown spatially on a floorplan
Good for: Visualizing underutilized corners, zones, or spaces in your layout.
Summary: Match your question to the right chart
Use this quick guide to decide where to look:
| Business Question | Go to this chart | Utilization Type |
|---|---|---|
| "How full is our space on average?" | KPI Panel, Trend, or Daily | Seat |
| "When is our space busiest?" | Utilization by Hour | Seat |
| "Which space types are underperforming?" | Space Type Comparison | Time |
| "Are rooms right-sized for how they’re used?" | Utilization by Group Size | Time |
| "Where do we have dead zones in the layout?" | Sensor Heatmap | Time |
